Virtual Fashion Week

Fashion

There are definitely more important things than fashion going on in the world right now, but for the fashion enthusiasts among us we can’t help but wonder if or even how future shows will go ahead. The big fashion week shows we have seen in the past, made up of designers, models, teams of hair and makeup artists, production teams, not to mention the hundreds of guests invited to watch the shows cannot possibly be crammed into one venue the way in which they always have been, (there is no way everyone can be kept two metres apart, especially with how many people are usually crammed onto the front row).

But what does this mean for the future of fashion? There has been all kinds of talk thrown around from going virtual to cancelling for now all together. The thing is, even if designers wanted to put together these big extravagant collections in a time of such huge uncertainty where cost and income are  concerning to say the least, for some it’s virtually impossible. Usually designers have a big team of people who work together in various workspaces in order to create even one garment, but working from home to do this is difficult and even sourcing the right materials is hard right now.

As for September fashion week, it’s hard to say what will happen. Paris and Milan have both decided to scrap their mens fashion week which was due to take place in June, but was moved to July, and decided to combine them with the normal women fashion week in September, but still no one knows how this will go. However, scrapping the summer fashion week in favour of a combined gender neutral show in September could be a good thing, not only for smaller fashion houses who will only have to fork out for one show, but for brands all over the world, as the fashion industry has (rightfully) more and more pressure put upon it to become more inclusive for all genders. Then again, this won’t phase some brands, as a few of them, such as Maison Margiela have already produced gender neutral collections.

Whatever happens to the upcoming fashion weeks, one thing is for certain and that is that they cannot possibly take place on the same grand scale of which they used to.
